World's Best Lasagna
Serves 12
This makes a large lasagna. Would be great for a barbeque with only a salad and bread needed. This would be enough for two meals and you could freeze half of it.

Ingredients
  1. 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
  2. 3/4 pound lean ground beef
  3. ½ cup mined onion
  4. 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  5. 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes (Hunts brands if you can get them)
  6. 2 (6. oz.) cans tomato paste
  7. 2 (6.5 oz.) cans canned tomato sause
  8. ½ cup water
  9. 2 tablespoons whit sugar
  10. 1-1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  11. ½ teaspoon fennel seeds (this really works)
  12. 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  13. 1 tablespoon salt
  14. ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  15. 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  16. 12 lasagna noodles
  17. 16 oz. ricotta cheese (I cut this cheese in half as it is not my favourite)
  18. 1 egg
  19. ½ teaspoon salt
  20. ¾ pound mozzarella cheese, sliced (Buy a small block of cheese and cut it)
  21. ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
  1. In a large pot, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned. Make sure the meat is broken up into small pieces as you go.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water.
  3. Season with sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, 1 tablespoon salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons parsley (the other 2 tablespoons will go into the cheese).
  4. Simmer, covered., for about 1-1/2 hours stirring occasionally.
  5. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  7. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
To assemble
  1. Spread 1-1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9X 13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange 6 noodles lengthwise over meat sauce
  3. Spread with one half of the ricotta cheese mixture.
  4. Top with 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese slices.
  5. Spoon 1-1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella
  6. Sprinkle with ¼ cup Parmesan cheese.
  7. Repeat layers and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  8. Cover with foil. To prevent sticking to the cheese, either spray foil with cooking spray or make sure the foil does not touch the cheese. (Stand something in the middle like wooden skewers, and gently lay foil over it).
  9. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 25 minutes.
  10. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
  1. Buy the kind of sausages you like and take them out of their casings, turns out there are many varieties of Italian sausage.
